It has been revealed that the truck was transporting branded rice, some of which had posters of a senatorial candidate of the Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC), Tayo Alasoadura, from Abuja, and was en route the Ifaki-Iworoko road in Ado Ekiti, when the incident occurred.
It suddenly lost control at about 8:45 pm on Saturday night and rammed into a market at the centre of the town.
In the ensuing tragedy, it crushed three shops and a commercial small bus, which had some passengers. One of the shops, a barbing saloon, has residents and students charging their cell phones inside it. They were all trapped in the accident.
It was learnt that the trailer caused multiple accidents on Iworoko road, as it also affected an 18-seater Toyota bus and a Toyota Corrolla car, thereby causing heavy traffic.
Among the victims were students of the Ekiti State University, a corps member, residents, traders in the area and a mother and child.
Titilayo Ayelola, who witnessed the fatal accident, noted that the driver of the truck lost control of the wheels and rammed into the people.
Ayelola disclosed that the lorry was conveying rice branded with ‘Senator Tayo Alasoadura for Senate 2019’.
Narrating the incident, Ayelola said: “The driver of the truck lost control of the wheels and rammed into the market which was close to the road in Iworoko. Many traders, who were still selling at night, were affected. In fact, it ran into the popular barber’s shop close to the road and crushed everyone in the place to death.
