Funmi Iyanda hosts Kolade Johnson’s brother, Boluwade Awakan, on Public Eye.

On Sunday, 1st November 2020, Funmi Iyanda debuted her show, Public Eye on TVC News. The show, recorded in August 2020, premiered on Sunday, just in time for what is going on in the country now.

This debut episode with the theme, Law Enforcement, and The Enforcers, centred on the ongoing fight against police brutality in Nigeria. It started off with a heart-wrenching reenactment of Kolade Johnson’s murder at the hands of SARS officials. In the following interview, Boluwade Awakan, Kolade’s brother, recounted the ordeals his family, especially his mother, faced following Kolade’s death.

Next on the show was a security expert, Dr. Kabir Adamu, who educated us on what we to do when confronted by irate SARS officials. Then, Funmi brought The Director of Investigation of the Nigerian Police Service Commission FCT- Abuja, Mr. Tijani Mohammed, and The Executive Director of the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Action Centre (RULAAC), Mr. Okechukwu Nwaguma, on the show.

It was during this segment that Mr. Nwaguma shocked us with this statement, “Between 2000 and 2004, the President (Obasanjo) ordered a moratorium. They carried out an audit and found out that over 50% of (police) recruited were criminals and misfits. We have untrainable people in the police force.”
