Harry Kane Ballon d’Or glory is finally his — and it came by the narrowest of margins. The England captain was crowned the 2026 winner in London on Monday, edging France forward Kylian Mbappé in a vote so tight that organisers described it as decided “by a hair’s breadth.”
While exact totals were not published, France Football editor-in-chief Vincent Garcia confirmed the gap between Kane and Mbappé was even smaller than the 41 points that separated Rodri and Vinicius Junior in 2024. Kane’s 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England made the difference, and the win ends a 25-year wait for English football — the first since Michael Owen in 2001.

The organisers disclosed this on the Ballon d’Or website in an article published after Monday’s ceremony in London, where Kane was named the winner of the men’s award ahead of Mbappé and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal.
“While the exact details of the tally haven’t yet been revealed, Vincent Garcia, the editor-in-chief of France Football, has already confirmed that the margin separating Kane from Mbappé is even smaller than the 41 points that separated Rodri from Vinicius Jr. in the 2024 edition.
“Out of a total of several thousand points, the victory was decided by a hair’s breadth,” the organisers said.
The exact vote totals for the 2026 award had not been disclosed in the article.
Kane’s victory marked the first time an Englishman had won the men’s Ballon d’Or in 25 years, following Michael Owen’s triumph in 2001.
The Bayern Munich striker enjoyed a prolific 2025/26 campaign, scoring 73 goals for club and country, according to UEFA.
The Ballon d’Or is decided by an international jury of journalists, with each voter selecting 10 players and awarding points on a descending scale from 15 to one.
Voters assess players’ individual performances, their teams’ achievements and titles won, as well as their class and fair play.
The 2026 result joins a list of closely contested editions in the award’s history.
In 2019, Lionel Messi beat Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk by seven points, winning with 686 points against the Dutchman’s 679.
In 2024, Manchester City midfielder Rodri finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior by 41 points, recording 1,170 points against 1,129.
The closest finishes cited by the Ballon d’Or website included the 1966 edition, when England legend Bobby Charlton beat Portugal’s Eusébio by one point, and the 1996 edition, when Matthias Sammer edged Brazilian forward Ronaldo by the same margin.
By contrast, Ousmane Dembélé won the 2025 award by a much wider margin, collecting 1,380 points to finish 321 points ahead of Yamal.
