With Nigeria reported to generate some 32 million tonnes of waste per year, of which 2.5 million tonnes is plastic waste, the country has always had a worrisome waste problem. This developing issue is further exacerbated by the country’s disposal, recycling and waste management system which has proven to be inefficient in dealing with both plastic and non-plastic waste, most of which end up in landfills, sewers, beaches and water bodies.
Last year, it was revealed that The Coca-Cola Foundation committed thousands of dollars to innovative initiatives such as the RecyclesPay Project, a programme through which waste collection was incentivised for vulnerable communities. This year, The Coca-Cola Foundation is sticking to this tested formula through the Cash 4 Trash Initiative, implemented by local NGOs, W.A.S.T.E Africa, in partnership with MEDIC.
World Cleanup Day, celebrated globally on September 19, 2020, saw diverse people come together to combat the solid waste problem through numerous community cleanup activities. To mark this day, Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited partnered with two local NGOs – African Cleanup Initiative and Mental and Environmental Development Initiative for Children (MEDIC), on cleanup activities across Lagos and Ibadan.
