Davido, Bright Chimezie, others storm Abia for new radio stations

Umuahia, the Abia State capital, is set to witness a star-studded event to mark the official launch of two new radio stations— Don FM 103.7 and Ikoro FM 93.3. Scheduled for Friday, June 27, 2025, the ceremony promises not just entertainment, but a bold statement of identity, legacy, and vision, led by media entrepreneur and philanthropist, Lucky Igbokwe, popularly known as Don Lulu.

A statement shared with Saturday Beats noted, “The celebration begins with a grand opening ceremony at the Umuawa Alaocha Town Square at 10 am, featuring traditional dance performances, cultural showcases, and a live broadcast to signal the stations’ first on-air moment. Later in the day, attention will shift to the Umuahia Township Stadium, where a vibrant music and comedy festival will bring the region to life.

“Some of the country’s biggest stars are billed to perform at the event, including Davido, Timaya, Kcee, Bright Chimezie, Peruzzi, Zlatan, Zoro, and Jeriq. Also appearing are nightlife personality, Cubana Chief Priest; and comedians Sabinus and Funnybone. Their collective presence underlines the importance of the occasion and the influence Don Lulu has cultivated over the years.”

he statement added that while Don FM is designed to serve today’s youth and digital-savvy audiences with contemporary programming, Ikoro FM is rooted in the cultural fabric of the Igbo people. It will focus on indigenous storytelling, folk music, and preserving local heritage. Together, the two stations represent a broadcasting model that blends the old with the new, offering both relevance and resonance.

Describing the new endeavours as a “cultural statement”, Don Lulu said, “This is not just about launching radio stations. It is about creating a cultural blueprint, empowering our youth, and ensuring that the soul of our people echoes far beyond Abia’s borders.”

Meanwhile, the event coincides with Don Lulu’s birthday; an occasion he has always used for philanthropic activities. Through the Don Lulu Foundation, he has funded scholarships, built classrooms, constructed homes, supported the physically challenged, and provided interest-free loans to small businesses. His philanthropy also extends to rural electrification efforts, including the donation of a 300 KVA transformer to improve local access to power.
