John Lewis: Martin Luther King aide and longtime lawmaker, a hero to many in Congress, has passed on
John Lewis, the champion of civil rights for Black Americans whose activism brought him from the bloodied streets of Selma, Ala., to the marble halls of Congress, died Friday. He was 80 years old.
Mr. Lewis, who said in late December he had pancreatic cancer, represented Georgia in the House for more than three decades. He sought to infuse the nation’s governance with a higher sense of morality, especially on matters of civil and human rights.
“When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something, to say something, and not be quiet,” Mr. Lewis said in a January 2017 speech honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to whom Lewis was a close confidant.
